Because Douglas shares its border, it celebrates the Mexico’s independence and its revolution along with the “Grito de Independencia,” the event that marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. The Fiestas include Mexican food vendors of every sort, a carnival, DJs, folklorico dancers, a parade down historic G Avenue mariachis and local bands. One of the unique events held during the Fiestas is the “China poblana” coronation, which comes from the tale of an early Asian woman who was enslaved and became a legendary figure in Mexico.
