Hummingbird season in Cochise County

It’s that time of year! Hummingbirds are making their way north, and some have already shown up Cochise County. Attending a hummingbird banding session is one of the ways you can get up close and personal with these beautiful birds.

If you’d like to learn a little bit more about hummingbirds, visit the Land of Legends in Cochise County, Arizona. Hummingbirds migrate through the San Pedro River region starting around March; then they head south again in fall in October.

Attend a hummingbird banding session
Two organizations actively monitor hummingbirds in southeastern Arizona and hold banding sessions: Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory and the Hummingbird Monitoring Network.

Dates and times at the various hummingbird banding session locations vary. Check the calendar of events page at the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory website and the schedule page of the Hummingbird Monitoring Network’s website to see when the next session is.

Adopt a hummingbird
While watching the banding sessions, SABO has a program, “adopt a hummingbird.” The program lets you donate to the organization. If the banded bird is recaptured, SABO will update you on its status. Tom Wood, co-founder of SABO, says it doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, it’s quite special!
