Five-Day Western History Excursion - a leisurely, fun-filled getaway into the past starts where the myth of the west began: Tombstone, Arizona. Day two, in Sierra Vista you'll visit the home of the Buffalo Soldier, experience the military history at Fort Huachuca, and observe the many archeological and birding sites in the area. Visit the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum, which is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institute or just stroll and admire the architecture throughout the town as it tells tales from the past. On day three, you'll head for Douglas to experience where American traditions and Mexican culture meet in lively settings. Be sure to pause for refreshment and take a long look around the Gadsden Hotel, one of the last of the grand, turn-of-the century hotels featuring a spacious two-story lobby, impressive marble columns, and an incredible Tiffany glass mural. Then take a trip back in time to the 1880s by visiting the home of Cochise County's Sheriff from 1888-1892 at the John Slaughter Ranch Museum. Day four sees you venturing north to the rugged yet beautiful Chiricahua National Monument. This cool, moist area is a center of Native American history as the homeland of the Chiricahua Apaches who under Geronimo and Cochise resisted the influx of pioneers for more than 25 years. The Chiricahuas are a wonderland of extraordinary rock formations complimented by miles of trails running through them. Begin day five in Willcox and immerse yourself in western culture at the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Rex Allen Museum. Afterward, take advantage of the many U-Pick-It Farms throughout the Willcox area and savor the taste of tree-ripened fruit. A Week of Birding - Cochise County is one of the birdwatching capitals of the world! See the annual Sandhill cranes coming to Willcox in the winter or catch the Southwest Wings Over Willcox Birding Festival in Bisbee. The Nature Conservancy's Ramsey Canyon Preserve in Sierra Vista is one of the top, hummingbird hotspots in the world. There and in other canyons in the Huachuca Mountains, you can find seclusion and beauty and glimpse elegant trogon, raptors, five-stripe sparrows and hundreds of other rare and exotic
